Victorian commercial blocks near the port The Strand began in the late 1830s as Avenue B on Galveston's original plat. In the nineteenth century Galveston was the state's major port, and this street became its commercial center. The district is now a National Historic Landmark, and its blocks hold restaurants, galleries, shops and museums. Staying inside it changes what a car is for: much of what visitors come to see is close together, so the car's work is mostly the long legs to and from the mainland and the trips out to the rest of the island. Two seasonal celebrations take place in the district: Mardi Gras, and Dickens on the Strand, a festival of Victorian heritage in which participants roam the Strand in period dress. If your stay overlaps either one, mention it when you book. Ask the hotel which entrance suits a car pickup and pass that detail along, so we both know where to meet. Over the causeway: choosing an airport The usual drive from Houston to the island is I-45 south, then the Galveston Causeway. Your airport decides how that drive begins. William P. Hobby Airport is on the south side of Houston, so the route reaches I-45 sooner. We follow that flight, and with the long drive to the island still ahead, a meet and greet at baggage claim means one fewer place to look for your driver. For a departure, send the flight time and the airport, then think through what sits between your room and the gate: checkout, the causeway, the drive across Houston and the check-in guidance your airline gives. That is what should set the pickup time. If friends are arriving on other flights or staying at other addresses, each ride is its own reservation. Beyond the Strand The island has a second personality along Seawall Boulevard, where the Gulf-side beachfront runs.
